LIRR Monthly Pass Charges – Cost & Savings Explained!

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) offers Monthly Passes that provide unlimited rides between designated zones for a specific calendar month. These passes are ideal for regular commuters, offering both convenience and cost savings.

Key Features of LIRR Monthly Passes:

  • Unlimited Rides: Valid for unlimited travel between the specified origin and destination zones throughout the calendar month.

  • Non-Transferable: Monthly tickets are non-transferable; the first person to use this ticket is the only person who can use it.

  • Purchase Availability: Available for purchase starting the 25th of the prior month.

Monthly Pass Charges by Zones:

LIRR fares are structured based on zones, with prices varying depending on the distance traveled. Below is a detailed breakdown of monthly pass charges effective as of June 25, 2024:

Additional Considerations:

  • CityTicket Program: For travel within New York City during off-peak hours, riders can utilize the CityTicket, priced at $5 for one-way travel.

  • Purchasing Options: Monthly passes can be purchased at ticket offices, ticket machines, or via the MTA eTix app. Purchasing tickets onboard trains may incur additional charges.

The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) offers a variety of ticket options to accommodate different travel needs and schedules. Below is a detailed overview of each ticket type:

1. One-Way Tickets

  • Peak One-Way: Valid for a single ride during peak travel times.

  • Off-Peak One-Way: Valid for a single ride during off-peak hours, offering a cost-saving alternative for travelers with flexible schedules.

2. Round-Trip Tickets

While LIRR does not offer a specific "round-trip" ticket, passengers can purchase two one-way tickets (one for each direction) to complete a round trip. It's important to match the ticket type (peak or off-peak) with the corresponding travel time.

3. Ten-Trip Tickets

These tickets provide ten one-way rides and are valid for six months from the date of sale. They can be used by more than one person, even when traveling together. There are different types of ten-trip tickets:

  • Peak Ten-Trip: Priced at the cost of ten peak one-way fares.

  • Off-Peak Ten-Trip: Offers a 15% discount compared to purchasing ten individual off-peak one-way tickets.

  • Senior/Disabled Ten-Trip: Available for seniors, Medicare recipients, or people with disabilities, sold at the reduced fare price. These tickets are not valid on inbound morning peak trains.

4. Weekly Tickets

Weekly tickets offer unlimited rides between the specified origin and destination zones for one week, from Saturday through Friday. They are ideal for short-term commuters or travelers who need flexibility within a week.

5. Monthly Tickets

Monthly tickets provide unlimited rides between the specified origin and destination zones for an entire calendar month. They are non-transferable and available for purchase starting the 25th of the prior month.

6. CityTicket

CityTicket is a discounted fare option for one-way travel within New York City on LIRR and Metro-North Railroad. As of September 4, 2024, CityTickets cost $5 during off-peak hours and $7 during peak hours. They are valid for travel that begins and ends within New York City.

7. Far Rockaway Ticket

Introduced in August 2023, the Far Rockaway Ticket offers discounted fares for travelers on the Far Rockaway Branch between Far Rockaway and other stations within New York City (excluding Belmont Park). This ticket provides the same discounts as a regular CityTicket and is available for purchase at the Far Rockaway station or via the MTA's TrainTime app within the station's vicinity.

8. Combo Ticket

Launched in December 2022, the Combo Ticket allows for journeys that utilize both LIRR and Metro-North Railroad systems via Grand Central. The fare is priced at $8 more than an adult off-peak ticket from an origin station on one system to Grand Central and is valid on both peak and off-peak trains.
